3 Different Ways to Love this Valentine’s Day

As they say, February is the month of love. The fabricated month of love, that is. We all have different feelings about Valentine’s Day. Some of us love it, some of us hate it, and some of us have a love-hate relationship with it. No matter where you stand, may I suggest that you try taking this Valentine’s Day as an opportunity to excessively, superfluously, ridiculously celebrate love and the people you love?

If a box of chocolates, bouquet of flowers or tickets to the symphony are up your alley, go for it. But more important than the material expression of love is the act of love. Only you know in which ways your loved ones experience love most. The key here is to do just that; to do what is ideal for your loved ones, from their perspective.

Here are 3 ways you can express love this Valentine’s Day, which you can tailor to your circumstances and the loved ones in your life:

  1. Acts of service for your significant other or someone in need. An act of service for someone in need could be a friend who doesn’t have a significant other, a loved one who is going through a difficult time, or volunteering at your local soup kitchen.

  2. Expressing love through language. Use the power of words, verbally or written, to tell your loved ones how much they mean to you and why. Prompt: How does your loved one enrich your life and make the world a brighter place?

  3. Showing gratitude. Through an act of service, language, a gift or quality time, let the people who make a positive difference in your life know that they are loved, valued, and appreciated. This person could be your significant other, friend, family member or colleague.

Valentine’s Day can be a touchy holiday for many, especially those going through a difficult time, grieving, or without a significant other when they’d prefer to be coupled up. If this is you, I hope you’ll remember that you are not alone; that you are loved, that you are valued, and that the world needs you. Do something special for yourself this Valentine’s Day, will you?

Love always (not just on Valentine’s Day),
Samantha
